Opto Isolator Sensor (Encoder Sensor)

This is a slotted Opto isolator module (MOC7811 or compatible), with an IR transmitter and a photodiode mounted inside. The module performs non-contact object sensing which is normally used as positional sensor switch (limit switch) or as Position Encoder sensors used to find position of the wheel. The IR LED and photodiode mounted face each other enclosed in plastic body and if any object comes in between the pair, output is triggered.
The module can be used as an encoder to calculate motor speed along with a connected slotted disk. When light emitted by the IR LED is blocked because of alternating slots of the encoder disc, logic level of the photo diode changes. This change in the logic level can be sensed by the microcontroller or by discrete hardware. The data can be used to give position feedback.
The module can also be used to find DC motor position / velocity control, Position and velocity of servos, Factory automation robots, Numerically controlled machinery, Computer printers and plotters, etc.
